Opportunities!

I just wanted to post about my latest adventures in MT (medical transcription) land. So I am in my last semester which they call the practicum (internship). There is no guaranteed placement into an intern role because it depends on how many companies they can get on board to take in interns. There were two companies available at the beginning of the class. One had us send in resumes before potential testing, the other went straight to testing. Well the one that took the resumes decided they didn't have space for interns, the other... I did the testing which was 5 reports (that were VERY hard) and I think I let my nerves get the best of me. All you had to get was 85% or better to get placement. I knew when I turned it in I didn't make it. When I got my feedback, I was so disgusted with some of the OBVIOUS mistakes I made. I got the words right, but had blatant blanks that were the same word over and over again, that I SHOULD have known! I also didn't pay close enough attention to thinking outside of the box regarding the context of the reports. I was so disappointed in myself.

Well since then, my instructor called me and said there is a company (that is actually local to me) that wanted to take in an intern for front-end editing and wanted to know if I was interested. She thought it would be good for me because the typing wouldn't be as strenuous and she also knew I had Dragon Medical so was at least a little familiar with voice recognition. She said she didn't know what platform the company used for VR at that time, then called me back to tell me they actually use Dragon also. Cool! So I have been in contact by email back and forth with the owner and is scheduled to start on Monday.

The owner contacted me by phone yesterday just to tell me that they were working out some kinks in some software upgrades they are doing, and to ask me a few questions. About 30 minutes later, after getting off the phone with her, she called back. She said they have been looking for someone to train to become a certified trainer of Dragon and she was so impressed by my phone voice, the way I carried myself on the phone, and lack of Texas accent, lol, that she wanted to offer to train me to use Dragon Medical to dictate, then I could become a certified remote trainer for them to train the doctors on how to use it in the best ways.

How cool is that??!! Sounds like if all goes well, I could get a triple-whammy out of this deal with training certification, VR editing training, and a transcription certificate, and have a job with them! I am very excited. It has kind of veered from traditional typing to editing and becoming a trainer, but with the way the field is moving, I suspect this is a good move and am very excited about it! I am so glad that my instructor nominated me for this position. There is only one other girl in the class that got placement at a local hospital. So I am blessed. I am so glad I got Dragon Medical as a back up plan, incase I became too weak to type. I have never had any formal training on it, and not quite sure how to use a lot of its features. So this will be great!
